Dramatic drone footage has captured the heart-stopping moment hundreds of sharks circled just yards beneath a group of six young surfers paddling off the coast of Western Australia.

The three-metre-long predators lurked menacingly in the water as the youngsters, oblivious to the danger below, relaxed on their boards. From above, the ominous dark shadows of the sharks created a chilling scene that has since gone viral, highlighting the thin line between a peaceful day at the beach and a potential marine nightmare.
Drone operator Sean Scott, who filmed the encounter last week, described the close call as unprecedented in his experience.
“I’ve never seen them come that close to people… it’s probably as big as they get,” Scott told 9News. “They were obviously going over to have a little bit of a look and got pretty close and realised that wasn’t their food chain and turned around. But it was pretty incredible to see these boys just floating on their back.”
Fortunately, none of the surfers were injured. The sharks, believed to be bronze whalers — a species with a documented history of human attacks — were primarily focused on a massive shoal of fish hugging the coastline. The feeding frenzy drew the predators in, but they ultimately showed little sustained interest in the humans.

Marine biologist and shark expert Rob Harcourt provided context for the predators’ behaviour.
“They are having a look and seeing the humans aren’t suitable prey,” he explained. “They’re really interested in the fish. The fish are small and really fat and really juicy and (provide) a great energy return.”
The footage, shot by Scott’s drone hovering overhead, offers a rare bird’s-eye perspective of the underwater drama. Initial wide shots show the surfers peacefully paddling, while closer inspection reveals the sheer scale of the shark presence — with hundreds of the powerful fish patrolling the waters directly beneath them.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the wild nature of Australia’s coastal waters, where human recreation and marine predators frequently share the same space. While the young surfers enjoyed a miraculous escape, the video underscores the importance of vigilance, situational awareness, and respect for the ocean’s apex inhabitants.

As drone technology continues to reveal hidden underwater worlds, encounters like this not only captivate audiences but also deepen public understanding of shark behaviour — often showing that these formidable creatures are more discerning hunters than mindless man-eaters.
