YOU’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER LINE! Terrifying 23-Stone Great White Relative Explodes From the Deep in Jaw-Dropping Devon Shark Incident

Ilfracombe, Devon — In a heart-pounding encounter off the British coast, angler Mark Watts landed one of the largest sharks seen in UK waters in recent memory — a massive porbeagle shark estimated at 23 stone (approximately 350 lbs).

The colossal catch, which bears a striking resemblance to a great white shark, left Watts and his companion momentarily stunned as the powerful predator erupted from the depths.

Dramatic footage captured the intense battle. Watts can be seen gripping the line with visible strain as the unseen fish pulls powerfully against the reel. Moments later, the enormous shark breaks the surface, thrashing violently in the water as Watts and his partner work to bring the beast under control.

Watts, an avid angler from Ilfracombe, Devon, hooked the shark using a line, reel, Ammo mackerel, and chum, deployed on a 10/0 Owner hook. Alongside Dan Hawkins of Reel Deal Chartered, he successfully hauled the fish aboard their boat for a closer look.

The pair identified the shark as a female before carefully releasing it back into the ocean, ensuring its safe return to the waters where it had been caught.

Porbeagle sharks belong to the same family as the notorious great white shark (Lamnidae), which explains their similar streamlined bodies, powerful builds, and fearsome appearance. Despite their intimidating looks and formidable size, porbeagles are not generally considered a threat to humans. They are, in fact, one of the most common shark species found in British waters, along with blue sharks.

The impressive catch highlights the rich marine biodiversity still present around the UK coastline and serves as a reminder of the respect required when engaging with these magnificent apex predators.

Watts and Hawkins expressed both shock and delight at the encounter, describing the experience as unforgettable. The shark was released none the worse for wear, swimming powerfully back into the deep.

While great white sightings remain exceptionally rare in UK waters, this close relative has once again proven that British seas still hold some truly impressive surprises for those brave enough to venture out with rod and line.
