The Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one still standing intact, may be on the verge of revealing a secret it has guarded for more than 4,000 years.

Experts involved in the ambitious ScanPyramids project believe they are close to pinpointing a hidden “recess” or void deep within the monumental structure, potentially unlocking one of Egyptology’s most enduring mysteries. Also known as the Khufu Pyramid, the awe-inspiring edifice was completed around 2560 BC and originally stood at approximately 146 meters, making it the tallest man-made structure on Earth for over 3,800 years.

Using a combination of cutting-edge, non-invasive technologies, the team aims to locate and better understand this concealed cavity. Infrared thermography — which detects subtle variations in heat emitted by different parts of the structure — is being paired with muography, a technique that tracks muons, subatomic particles generated when cosmic rays collide with Earth’s atmosphere. These methods allow researchers to peer inside the massive limestone blocks without causing any damage.

Muography has already proven its value in Egyptian archaeology, successfully identifying hidden tunnels within the Bent Pyramid, whose distinctive angled shape earned it that name. “All the devices we put in place are designed to find where the cavity is located. We know there is one, but we’re trying to find out where,” said Mehdi Tayoubi, president of the HIP Institute, which is leading the ScanPyramids initiative.

According to the project team, one void is suspected to lie behind the north face of the Great Pyramid and could take the form of a corridor extending into the monument’s interior. A second potential cavity has been detected beneath one of the structure’s descending corridors. The revelations build on an announcement made by the ScanPyramids team last October confirming the existence of previously unknown internal spaces.

Since Napoleon Bonaparte’s scholars arrived in Egypt two centuries ago and laid the foundations of modern Egyptology, scientific tools have steadily peeled back layers of mystery surrounding the ancient civilization’s treasures. The ScanPyramids project represents one of the most sophisticated efforts yet to demystify the Khufu Pyramid, located on the Giza plateau near Cairo.

Once the precise location and nature of the void are confirmed, archaeologists hope the same technologies can be applied to other longstanding enigmas. Among them is the search for the burial place of Queen Nefertiti, the influential wife of King Akhenaten, who promoted a monotheistic cult centered on the sun god Aton. A theory proposed by British Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves suggested her remains might lie hidden in a secret chamber within Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Radar scans conducted in 2015 yielded inconclusive results, and the idea has since been largely dismissed by prominent experts, including former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass, who noted that a follower of Aton would unlikely have been interred in that sacred necropolis.

The discovery would not only deepen our understanding of the Great Pyramid’s complex internal architecture but also highlight the ingenuity of ancient Egyptian builders. While Egypt is home to the most famous examples, pyramid construction was not unique to the Nile Valley; in South America, what is believed to be the world’s largest pyramid remained concealed beneath a “mountain” for centuries.

As the ScanPyramids team continues its meticulous work, anticipation is building. The possibility of exposing a lost chamber after more than four millennia stands as a powerful reminder that even the most studied monuments of antiquity may still hold astonishing secrets — waiting for modern science to bring them into the light.
