The mere suggestion of Sidney Crosby wearing a Montreal Canadiens uniform is enough to set hockey fans dreaming — and arguing.
This time the idea floated out of Toronto, where host Sid Seixeiro floated a bold, attention-grabbing proposal on air: the Canadiens should make a serious push to acquire the Pittsburgh Penguins captain. Seixeiro even outlined a very specific package: Sidney Crosby to Montreal in exchange for prospect Michael Hage and a 2027 first-round pick.
Confident in his pitch, Seixeiro urged Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes to act. “Kent Hughes… You gotta make one call, man. Go get Crosby. You got the prospects. You got the picks. You got a team ready to make a move. What Montreal Canadiens fan says no to that? Nobody.”

The reaction from fans, however, has been far from unanimous.
Many supporters immediately pushed back, arguing the proposed return is simply too steep. Surrendering a highly regarded young talent like Hage — a prospect many believe carries significant long-term upside — for a 39-year-old veteran, no matter how legendary, feels like an overpay to a sizable portion of the fan base. In their view, the price risks mortgaging future flexibility for a short-term splash.
Others see more nuance in the idea. Adding a player of Crosby’s caliber and character to the Canadiens’ locker room could deliver intangible value that lasts well beyond his on-ice production. A role model of Crosby’s stature has the potential to accelerate the development of Montreal’s young core for years to come, providing leadership and standards that are difficult to quantify on a spreadsheet.
Yet a major obstacle remains firmly in place. Crosby has repeatedly stated his desire to finish his career in Pittsburgh. According to Penguins reporter Josh Yohe, discussions about a contract extension are expected to begin before the end of the summer. At 39, the future Hall of Famer is still producing at an elite level, having recorded 74 points last season. He is entering the final year of his current deal, which carries an $8.7 million cap hit.
In the end, Seixeiro’s proposal remains what it is: a fun, provocative idea that sparks debate and captures the imagination. While the thought of Crosby in bleu-blanc-rouge carries undeniable long-term appeal for some Canadiens fans, the far more probable outcome is that No. 87’s future will continue to unfold in Pittsburgh.
For now, Montreal supporters can keep dreaming — and keep arguing about the price.
