Isolated from Earth’s communication networks while passing over the lunar far side in May 1969, the crew reported hearing what they described as “outer-space type music” — an eerie, low-frequency whistling sound emanating from their headsets.
The incident occurred during a critical phase of the mission when the astronauts were completely cut off from Mission Control in Houston. Rather than immediately reporting the strange phenomenon upon regaining contact, the crew chose to remain silent, reportedly concerned that disclosure might raise questions about their psychological fitness for the high-stakes journey.

Michael Collins, the Command Module pilot for Apollo 11 just two months later, encountered comparable strange noises while orbiting the Moon in July 1969. In his memoir Carrying the Fire, Collins reflected on the phenomenon:
“Had I not been warned about it, it would have scared the hell out of me.”
Fortunately, as Collins noted, radio technicians offered a straightforward explanation: interference between the Lunar Module’s and Command Module’s VHF radios.
